UFC Lightweight division fighter Islam Makhachev recently spoke to RT Sport. The 155 pounder discussed a number of topics during the interview, including the upcoming Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler fight at UFC 262.

The bout at UFC 262 will determine a new Lightweight Champion; with former Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov having ‘officially’ retired over the weekend.

UFC President Dana White confirmed on Friday that Khabib had now retired, despite the President attempting to tease him back for a potential chance to go 30-0.

‘29-0 it is. He is 100% officially retired’ Dana White wrote. ‘It was incredible to watch you work @TeamKhabib, thank you for EVERYTHING and enjoy whatever is next my friend.’

‘Honestly, I think Oliveira deserves it” Islam Makhachev began when speaking to RT Sport. “He’s got a good win streak, but I don’t agree with Chandler being in there. He had one UFC fight and he hasn’t been tested. That first fight ended quickly.”

“I think Justin Gaethje or Dustin Poirier could’ve fought for the title” Makhachev continued. “But the UFC always has their own plans.”

The aforementioned Justin Gaethje also reacted recently to not being chosen to fight for the title in May. ’I woke up yesterday to train for a matchup with Chandler on May 15th expecting a bout agreement any moment” Gaethje wrote on Twitter.

“Today that is not the case” Justin continued. “I don’t know what I do yet but I like this feeling. It was a good day at sparring practice.’
