Justin Gaethje has taken to Twitter to discuss the now confirmed UFC 262 main event. The company confirmed yesterday that Michael Chandler will be taking on Charles Oliveira for the Vacant UFC Lightweight Championship in May.

The fight was confirmed due to Khabib’s now ‘official’ retirement. UFC President Dana White and Khabib had been going back and forth in meetings regarding the 29-0 Champion, but now it appears White has conceded to losing the Russian great.

Justin Gaethje was previously rumoured for a potential fight against Michael Chandler in May. With the 1-0 UFC fighter now being put in the title fight, Gaethje will be looking for another opponent, with Dan Hooker, Rafael Dos Anjos, Islam Makhachev or perhaps even Nate Diaz in contention.

Justin Gaethje on Michael Chandler

’I woke up yesterday to train for a matchup with Chandler on May 15th expecting a bout agreement any moment” Justin Gaethje wrote on Twitter. “Today that is not the case, I don’t know what I do yet but I like this feeling. It was a good day at sparring practice.”

Gaethje has not fought since his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, that was at the main event of UFC 254 in October 2020. Gaethje was coming into that fight with a fifth round TKO victory over Tony Ferguson; putting him ahead of the competition at 155.

UFC 262: Oliveira vs Chandler takes place on May 15th from Houston, Texas. It has not been confirmed if Justin Gaethje is still being considered for a fight on that card. As mentioned there are a few competitors at 155 that could matchup well with the American fighter.
