WWE Superstar Ruby Riott recently took to Instagram to talk about the influence behind her Royal Rumble gear. Riott wore a red top that read ‘Riott Grrrl,’ referencing the hardcore punk subgenre that emerged in the early nineties with bands such as Bratmobile, L7, Jack Off Jill and Bikini Kill.

“The Riot Grrrl Movement in punk is the equivalent to The Women’s Revolution in wrestling” Ruby Riott wrote on Instagram. “The movement encouraged females to become more involved in the male-dominated punk scene. As well as express themselves in non-hierarchical ways, to accept themselves and each other regardless of difference, to form their own bands, self-publish their stories and strategies in zines, and to create a safe space for that expression.”

“And at the head of that is one of it’s ‘founding mothers’ @mskathleenhanna” Riott continued, citing the lead singer of the aforementioned Bikini Kill. “At this year’s Royal Rumble, I paid homage to a woman who helped pave the way for women in the music industry and that empowers the women that love that music!”
