WWE have made a number of on-screen and backstage talent releases over the past few weeks. Some names have been more expected than others, but the likes of Samoa Joe and Braun Strowman came as a huge shock to fans.

It’s not clear how or why WWE are making such a litany of releases, as 2020 was their most profitable year in history and they’re heading back on the road soon.

According to a recent report from Fightful Select, WWE President Nick Khan is ‘willing to take the heat’ for these releases.

Nick Khan was brought into WWE to make changes to their operating format and to bring in extra revenue. Khan was behind the deal to bring WWE’s United States streaming content to Peacock, which netted a huge return for the company.

Khan has also made changes on the corporate level, seemingly bringing in ‘his’ people to run the company from WWE’s headquarters, but the real speculation seems to indicate that he is looking to put the company in a position for a sale.

“Nick Khan specifically is willing to take the heat and did not seem concerned about prior plans, projects, who the person or married to, how long they’ve been signed, or what they have going on.’

With 2020 being a huge year for the company, these recent releases will help to balance the books when WWE heads back out on the road and the operating costs will go back up.

So whilst these moves aren’t an indication that WWE are looking to sell, Nick Khan seems happy to put himself in a position to take blame…and he seemingly isn’t phased by it in the slightest.
