There have been rumours abound since Jay White claimed that he was ‘leaving’ New Japan Pro Wrestling. The former IWGP Heavyweight Champion lost against Kota Ibushi on Day 2 of Wrestle Kingdom just last week. During the incredible promo that White cut after the match he stated that “after New Year Dash? I’m done.”
Since then there have been reports stating that WWE are making a ‘big play’ for the Bullet Club member. Several promotions are reportedly interested in the Switchblade, but WWE appears to be making the biggest moves to try and sign the New Zealand native.
Jay White To WWE?
Dave Meltzer somewhat updated the situation on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio. Meltzer claimed that Jay White had told All Elite Wrestling that he had a seven-year-deal with NJPW. This was back in 2018, so is this was the case then he still has at least 4-5 years left on his current deal.
Meltzer would also state that he has not spoken directly to Jay White nor NJPW recently about this situation. The aforementioned contact between White and AEW back in 2018 was due to All Elite courting the Switchblade to join the upstart promotion, with the company EVPS, namely Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes, being acutely aware of his talent and potential.
Whilst it’s difficult to fully confirm the story? It adds another layer to the annual ‘will xxx appear in the Royal Rumble?’ story that we see pretty much every January.
There’s also the potential for WWE to buy-out Jay White from his contract with New Japan Pro Wrestling. This however would be a hefty number if the seven-year deal claims are true.
