British star Will Ospreay defeated Kota Ibushi at today’s NJPW Sakura Genesis event. Ospreay was challenging Ibushi for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of the show.

Ospreay defeated Ibushi after hitting a Hidden Blade and Stormbreaker to get the pinfall and win his first singles IWGP Championship in New Japan.

After the contest; Will Ospreay called out Kazuchika Okada. The former IWGP Champion appeared but before he could comment on the new Champion Shingo Takagi demanded that he get a shot at the new title holder first.

Shingo Takagi actually defeated Okada in the first round of the New Japan Cup; therefore he asked why Okada would deserve the title shot over him.

The British sensation agreed with Takagi, and said that he would defend the belt against Shingo first and then come for Okada. The new Champion wanted to face Okada to avenge his loss from Wrestle Kingdom 15 against the ‘Rainmaker.’

AJ Styles congratulated the new IWGP Champion after the event. Styles wrote on Twitter, “it’s was like I was looking into the mirror. Congratulations to the New IWGP Champion.”
